Smiley Great, thanks lunch lady. The principal was *supposed* to talk to the lunch ladies about going over labels for the one time a month, maybe two...that DD will want to eat the hot lunch. So I go in this morning, only to be met by a lady looking at me as if I have two heads (you *know* that look). So they were a little peeved about doing the research for me, and she then suggested DD just eat cold lunch. To which I promptly state, I think she should have the opportunity to eat hot lunch safely like the rest of the kids, don't you? She of course agreed Smiley . I'll be mentioning that one to the principal.

I'm getting quicker with my replies every day....I know a year ago, I would have been apologetic about things. Now, no way. Give her what she is due and get over yourself.

Ok, rant done.... Smiley

Somehow, is it possible that having to wear that 504-private-school-tiara is requiring that your backbone be stronger and able to withstand the heavier load?! Smiley

I have felt so much more empowered after the lengthy discussions we've all had in the past month or so as to FULL INCLUSION (where safety is not truly compromised) of our food allergic children and selves.

Good job speaking up. DS went to private schools in elementary and there was no hot lunch. So when he transitioned to public in 6th grade, I compromised with the lunch ladies and DS did not enter the cafeteria on days they cooked anything containing peanut.

Well, the next year when he went to the junior high (7th & 8th), I was a bit more *forceful* and they decided to remove all known peanut products from the cafeteria. Woohoo! He safely ate hot lunches with no problems for the last two years.

This year, he moved to the high school. As DS has had reactions to the cooking of peanut products and the cafeteria is *open* in the middle of the high school, I was ready with a doctor letter advising he could not be exposed to the processing/cooking of any peanut product. I was prepared for a fight and thought there would be some resistance. But, aha, no resistance!! The high school has removed all known peanut products and DS eats a hot lunch every day. Ok, so he still avoids the desert unless it is something like fruit.

I did talk to a teacher at the junior high this week who told me they had peanut butter crispies with lunch again. So, evidently, there are no allergic kids at the juinior high this year.

Bottom line, our children are just as entitled to a hot lunch as any other child and the school is obligated to make it a safe one. No way would I be apologetic any more Smiley

Great response! That was such a cop-out by those lunch ladies. No offense, but were they older women? I find that the older women don't want to be bothered with doing anything other than what they have to. They are definitely set in their ways.

I'm going to play Devil's advocate here. Could it be that the lunch lady did not want to take the responsibilty if anything were to happen? In our school, I check the ingredients each time DS eats the school lunch (almost every day). Part of the reason is that no one else wants to be the one who is responsible (aka:most likely to lose job and/or get sued) in case of a reaction. I am OK with that. They don't get paid enough to want that kind of stress.
