I want to share our recent experience with Outback:

DD likes to order a sweet potato there. We found out that the sweet potato is basted with butter before baking. You can request a plain no-butter sweet potato. I don't know if this pertains to the regular white potatoes; haven't ordered that.

They also serve brown sugar with the sweet potato. We just found out that the brown sugar is mixed with cinnamon and butter.

Just lettin' y'all know.

Ugh... thanks for the head's up. Based on this http://outback.com/foodandmenus/nutritionalinfo.aspx#allergies, it looks like you can get it without the butter. I've looked at their menu and thought about trying them, but haven't gotten up the nerve yet. We had a bad experience at a similar restaurant (Bugaboo Creek) and I'm still too nervous. Have you had good luck there overall?

Yes, overall we have had good luck. No reactions from eating there. BUT we are wondering about DD outgrowing the milk allergy, esp after our recent experiences there. DS has eaten there, too, with no problem. So I really don't know if I can recommend it or not. Go at your own risk, I guess! Just don't order the potato . . .

We have had great service at Outback (MA,EA,PA,TNA). We stress no butter or seasonings at all. They have also been willing to cook DS's steak in a separate, clean pan. We have also recently starting bringing along a Chef Card when we go out...

So far we've stuck to plain baked potato, steamed broccoli and plain steak.

We've eaten there 4 times I think.

The one we go to just changed hands...and it used to be better...cleaner, and just better. But even so it was fine. They are pretty aware. DS gets a grilled joey sirlion - no spices, steamed brocolli and a spotted dog sundae for dessert. He does NOT eat the bread. The bread is made offsite (I'm guessing Schwans) and I haven't checked into it.

They have a new menu - at least here - with a lot of options under $15

Yep, this is what we do, too; we stress NO BUTTER OR MARGARINE. We use the chef card. DD occasionally has a garden salad with oil/vinegar instead of the broccoli.
We've eaten there several times over the last few years. This is the first we had heard of the butter on the potato and in the brown sugar.

White potatoes are covered with margarine and are not safe. Also, some of the margarine contains wheat if you are allergic to that.

We pre-order a plain baked potato about 2 hours before we want to eat, and they wrap it in foil and bake it plain. We've eaten there many times. We eat the same as the others: steak, baked potato. We have them wrap the steak in foil on the grill. We've never had a problem and have always found them very attentive Smiley

I didn't know they did that. But I've actually not been tempted to eat there since I don't digest steak. The only thing they have that I could eat is a hamburger patty and I could get that anywhere.

We ate there for the first time in July. Dd did eat the sweet potato. I asked the owner (different Outbacks have different owners?) and he said that the sweet potato had only cinnamon and brown sugar. He said no butter or margarine. Dd ate it and was fine. Now I`m confused. Do different Outbacks have different ingredients? I remember he said he was the owner, not the manager. BTW, he brought out the bread ingredients for us and the bread was safe for milk, peanuts, tree nuts.

Dd would have symptoms if she ate unbaked milk, so if there were really butter in there, I think she would have had symptoms. Or maybe the cinnamon/brown sugar/?butter? was before it was baked. Or maybe there was no butter in there.
