Okay, so I could really have gone wild with the thread title here...

really. Smiley

Pimp my birthday....

our very own Cakewrecks...

Well.

You get the picture...

At any rate, I wanted to share a couple of birthday cakes that I've done-- including one that featured fondant. Yes, ladies, the infamous caterpillar. Smiley

I hope that other people will share, too-- so that we can turn this into an 'idea box' of sorts.

Share what's possible with different allergens, etc.

Smiley

Butterfly that I made for DD's third birthday-- her first WHEAT containing cake. (Still dairy, soy, and egg-free, however.)

I also did not have a pan in the shape of a butterfly-- so this is a round that has been cut and then rearranged.

With frosting so LOUD that only a preschool girl could love it... Smiley

Das Caterpillar.

Smiley

Fondant in FOUR colors. WoooHoo!

(Cake was a huge hit. Fondant, not so much. As I've mentioned, got a lot of ooohs and ahhhhs... right up until it was time to EAT the stuff. Then most guests dicovered that fondant tastes remarkably like lightly flavored sugar cubes.)

My favorite part is the FEET. Smiley

Great thread CM! I'll post my great hula girl cake once I figure out how to upload photos. I love both of your cakes.

CM - thank you for the caterpillar idea. I'm always looking for ways to make "Cupcake Wrecks". I mean that seriously, I always make DS1 cupcakes because they have a very short shelf life which means they have to be frozen shortly after being made. Not to mention, that if I make cupcakes that are gluten/egg free, I generally make them for just him as the taste is not appealing to us (cost can be prohibitive as well).

Heck, he's not a fan of cucpcakes either. He loves the icing. Thinking I could definitely make a caterpillar with glops of icing on Enjoy Life cookies which has been the treat for 3 out of 4 birthdays.

Caterpillar actually wasn't made with cupcakes (though it could be...); it was made with cakes cooked in small round-bottomed prep bowls. (About 1.5 c capacity)

I think that I got the initial idea from a Martha Stewart mag.

It was a HUGE cake. Each 'segment' was enough for ~4 people to have very generous servings.

That cake was egg, milk, and soy free. (as well as nuts... obviously)

Wow, I didn't realize Mr. Caterpillar was that big!! Awesome.

I can barely ice a cake. I'm pathetic.

Great Thread, CM!!

I LOVE the caterpillar. What a cute idea. I think I will have to borrow that one for a birthday someday . . .

DD would like the butterfly, too!

How did you make the feet for the caterpillar?

<snicker> I'm pathetic too wrt frosting a cake. I made DH finish DS's last birthday cake. I was making a pokemon (Pikachu) cake and I just couldn't handle the crumbs that were getting into the frosting. Drove me nuts. Told DH to take over.

And I know now from that other cake thread that I needed to frost and freeze and then add another layer of frosting. Will definitely do that for this weekend's cake extravaganza.

This explains the extent of my cooking skills:

But here's DS's Pokemon cake from last fall: (please don't notice the chocolate crumbs in the frosting)

This is DD's usual choice for a birthday "cake" -- pumpkin pie! It is delish.

milk, egg, soy, and peanut free!

LOL that is what my ds wanted for his bd. I HATE Pumpkin pie unless it is really spiced up. DH and DS don't like it that spicy.

I make gooey butter cake. It is not a pretty cake. (esp. when I make it), but it is decadent.

caterpillar's 'feet' were cutouts with aspic cutters-- a little flower cutter was what I used for the base of the candles.

I used a larger cookie cutter for the purple flowers on top.

Yeah.... I've done Blueberry Pie for DH's birthday on numerous occasions-- LONG before DD's MFA entered our lives. Smiley

This was my first attempt at something other than a 9x13 cake; DD's 8th birthday:
