Just wanted to give an update on my son's milk allergy and recent progress we've made since starting baked milk. Quick history: diagnosed at 7 months after hives, sneezing and spit up after a spoonful of yogurt. Initial RAST was 16 and has decreased over time to approximately 7. A couple accidental exposures before he turned 2 told us he was still allergic, but reactions were always controlled with benadryl.
DS is now almost 4. When DS was approximately 2.5, allergist told us to try baked milk (and egg incidentally). It has gone very well. We began with long-cooked baked goods (e.g., gingerbread that cooked for an hour at 350 degrees). Over time we have progressed through biscuits and cookies to pancakes and waffles and french toast. I am also now making meatballs with milk (and egg) and breaded things like chicken cutlets.
DS is now having small amounts of bread with straight butter. This weekend I also made cake frosting with butter (still used soy milk for the milk ingredient). He has also had some real cream cheese on crackers. Last night we had fish with grapefruit beurre blanc sauce (LOTS of butter). On rare occasions he gets a couple hives on his face, but nothing more.
I know the next steps are cheese and then, with luck, whole milk. This morning I was in our basement and saw our ice cream maker. I though I had put it away forever. But suddenly, I'm thinking - "maybe next summer!" Yikes! That sure sounds scary. I'll update as we go.
Hope this gives hope to somebody out there scouring the web looking for a sign their little one might outgrow a milk allergy. I was there. Well - still am. But I think we are close.
Isn't it funny how we lie to ourselves and say "I'm Ok with it, we'll be just fine." But then we keep our quiche pans and ice cream makers tucked away because we never do lose hope.
I do think - slowly, slowly - we are all going to get there. Maybe next summer or the summer after that you'll be busting out some deviled eggs for a picnic! Really - is there anything better than a deviled egg while sitting on a picnic blanket on a sunny, breezy day. Especially when followed by a big scoop of homemade peach ice cream. Heck why not go crazy - with toasted NUTS for a topping!
