I was at my mother's house this weekend. She had bought cinnamon sticks at Whole Foods (their store brand) that were labeled as "may contain."

WOW. Wonder how they are managing THAT?

I didn't think I would be surprised by any of these anymore, after 8 years. But this one did surprise me.

THANKS for posting this!

Forgive me if this is a dumb question, but cinnamon sticks the spice or pastry?

If it is the spice, how would it be a may contains?

Just goes to show, every label, every time!

The spice. My mom was putting them in the cider she was heating up. I imagine that it's either CYA, or they are put in the jar on the same equipment that handles something nutty. But yes, the warning on cinnamon sticks did surprise me.

This message is passed along from another allergy board:

http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/WA_FEAST/message/15937

Quote:

Hi all—This is some information from a Stash Tea representative that
one of our Salem members passed along. Use at your own discretion.

Amy
-------------------------------------------------------------------
Stash Tea ( http://www.stashtea.com/ ) is manufactured in a facility
that processes peanut and tree nuts.

While grocery shopping today, I noticed that there was a
chocoate/hazelnut tea ( http://www.stashtea.com/w-050074.htm .) I thought, that's odd, so I read the box.
Ingredients contain peanuts and hazelnuts. So after picking up and
reading other boxes, there were no disclaimers about traces or
manufacturing processes. I called the Portland based company and
eventually talked with their Quality Assurance department and learned
that this particular tea does contain a flavoring which consists of
peanuts and hazelnuts. They are working to eliminate this "flavoring"
but it will be at least a year to a year and a half. Some of their
other teas also contain this flavoring. If it does, it is listed on
the box. The concerning part is they are choosing not to list that
the other teas "may contain traces...." since it is all manufactured
in the same facility. The risk is there for those with severe food
allergies. I passed along my concerns as a parent and our organization.

I went to pick up my dd's eyeglasses from our new eye dr- and they have one of those candy machines in the waiting room. I hadn't noticed when we came in for our appointments- but it is filled with M&Ms, what appear to be Reese's pieces (unmarked), and Peanuts!

If I had seen it the first day, I would have probably walked out! Now, however, I met the dr and really like him...

I'm a eye doctor, and never in a million years would I consider putting food in my waiting room.

Perhaps a discussion the next time you are there, or sooner, with the doctor regarding food allergies and a suggestion that they put PN/TN free items in would be helpful. That waiting room, if there PN's coming out of the machine, is probably totally contaminated. There are so many other items they could use.

plain old oatmeal - for the life of me I cannot find safe oatmeal here in Germany --- just the regular oats you bake with or make homemade hot oatmeal. They all have same equipment and may contain peanuts and almonds/hazelnuts on them...grrrrrr.

At the doctor's office -- my son's ped's office staff were eating nuts and they are the people who lead patients back and take their weight, temp, blood pressure, etc before the docs arrive.

REally, though, the waiting room itself could also have food residue anywhere. People could easily feed their kids while waiting in them. Which means food can really be anywhere in public. We found a peanut shell on the sand near us at the beach.

My grandmother kissed DS and he got hives--maybe from her lipstick.

At other events he got hives from kisses from relatives.

On a butternut squash! I handed it to the farmer's market guy to buy and he handed it to his kid to weigh. His kid is eating fudge - chocolate /peanut butter and I notice he gets a small blop on my squash from his fudgy fingers. Wash everything.

My son had a reaction to the Save on foods brand of BBQ sauce and there wasn't anything on the ingredients list.

He also was drinking apple juice box from Sunripe and got covered in hives. He was tested for apples and it came out negative and can drink apple juice from them now. I guess cross contamination can be anywhere. The company was baffled about that one.

Hey -- can this be moved to the new Pnut area & stickied there?

Or is there a reason to leave it in Main?
