My neighbor has had varying degrees of allergic reactions to alcohol (beer, wine, food cooked with/in alcohol). She gets hot, turns red, experiences swelling, throat tightening and chest pressure. Anyone else allergic to alcohol? What would be the consistent ingredient in all forms of alcohol? Is there testing for alcohol allergies??
Thanks for any input!

My sister is allergic to alcohol. She gets major hives and breathing difficulties. I am not sure about what ingredient exactly, but she says it's all alcohol.

Those symptoms sound a lot like my sulfite reactions . . .
Sulfites are in some beers, all wines, sherry, Port, Vermouth, brandy . . . (what am I missing?). I don't know about grain alcohols like rums, whiskeys, etc. (I recall maybe the darker ones have sulfites?) But mixers for those mixed-alcohol drinks can have sulfites as well.

I am curious about this too.
I don't know that much about allergies but I found this page because of others suggesting it's sulfites: http://allergies.about.com/od/foodallergies/a/sulfites.htm
After reading that page, which mentions a type of test they can do (where basically they watch your reaction to sulfites), I don't think that the "alcohol allergy" I have has to do with sulfites. Otherwise I would notice problems with other foods in their lists.

sulfites, interesting. I think I'll go google. I have had some issues in the past with drinks. Last time I had a beer, about 4yrs ago, I got really hot in my face, flushed, terrible headache, reflux/indegestion, GI upset(bad stomach cramps and diarrhea)...all from a beer. And it lasted about 3 days, that sucked! Thanks for the info!

Celiac too if it just happens with beer. I'd have an AWFUL hangover from one beer and could drink a bottle of wine and feel fine the next morning (not that I ever have).
Pretty much all of the asian population gets red from alcohol.

It is very possible and could mean something else is going on in your body. My mother is Anaphylactic to alcohol. She also has Carcinoid Cancer - and alcohol allergy is a side effect/symptom. For years and years, she would start flushing at the first sip of anything alcoholic, she just avoided it and didn't think much of it. Then she was diagnosed with the carcinoid cancer - found out that they are related.
I get flushed everyone so often when I drink wine. Scares me that I could have an underlying problem. Doesn't happen often enough to make me stop though!
