I called King Pharma -- they sell the epi-pen in Canada. The first CSR knew nothing about this, so she had the Manager call me back.

This is not currently scheduled to be released in Canada and she didn't really have much information.

I asked if it was the same size -- will it fit in the e-belt. She didn't know. But, they don't recommend using any carrier that requires taking it out of the case it comes in. Any wiggle-room can result in the grey cap coming off and the pen misfiring. (Personally, I'm sticking with the e-belt. I don't feel there's much wiggle-room in it, and it has saved my son from two possible injuries, one a fall of 5-6 fit and he landed on the e-belt, the other a minor fender-bender when he was thrown into the seat belt -- with the epi-pen on and possibly between him and the belt.)

I also asked about cost (same or more)?

Unfortunately, she was not able to answer any of these questions as it is not yet being released here. (My own personal theory is that our government may not have approved it yet, but that's my opinion and not something the rep said.) If/when it will be sold in Canada, it will be posted on the Canadian site, and anyone registered with their site will get an e-mail about it.

Anyway, JR, thank you for posting this, and any Americans, when this is what you get, please make sure to post info about it.

You know, the more I think about this, the more irritated I become. What is wrong with the current design? Seems like it is tried and true.
Unless they were redesigning to make significant improvements in reliablility/size/user friendlyness...why mess with a good thing? Especially given that people are becoming more comfortable and familiar with epi pens. (like family, friends etc.)

Plus, I see that it's not going to fit in our ebelt. That really ticks me off. That darn belt cost me well over $100.00 and its really the only thing I can get ds to wear. He hates the bulky, dangling holders, plus he has to carry his inhaler.

*Sigh*

Still waiting for one that's easy for boys/men to carry.

I am so glad that this isn't comming to Canada... yet. I am already worrying about having to re-train everyone with a new system

I worry that this is going to cause confusion in an emergency.

I now have the new trainers. Orange tip and blue cap--designed to be the most recognizable by those with colorblindness. Orange tip does have the sheath--interesting design. The Dey rep said how folks got which end to use confused and demonstrated how the new design would help. However, when I train, I always emphasize the black end is the business end--hands and fingers off--watch them like a hawk during training and correct hand position. I'm now trying to figure out how to reset trainers--which involves pushing in the sides of the sheath-- while making it exceedingly clear that you don't play, touch, etc that tip end. I bet this would be clear with an expired new model--but first I have to get new models and then wait for them to expire.

Good news, my 7-yr old can use the new trainer easily. Bodes well for group training. I like the feel of it, and the cap is more readily seen as a cap. One of the main mistakes in training is proceeding to administer without removing that cap--it's really clear now.

Tigerlily, how much different is the size of the new one?

Looks shorter and fatter in the pics I've seen.

Tigerlily - any chance you can post a photo of the trainers side-by-side?

I don`t like it. Now I will have to retrain people and they will get confused. I already wonder if they will remember how to do it in the moment months after I trained them, and now they will have to unlearn what I taught them and learn something new. And it does seem like there are more things that can go wrong with this new one. I also tell the teachers that you can tell if it worked because you will see the needle. I think this new one will be more confusing for the teacher or kids who are just learning to self administer.

I read somewhere that there's a window on the new one that turns red after the medication has been administered so there is still a way to tell if it works. I'm still not sure about the new one, though.

Seems like adding unecessary complexity.

That is a bad idea in a device that needs to work flawlessly about 100% of the time-- and be as simple as possible to use correctly.

Sesame Street just turned 40. So I guess this means that I really am older than Dirt Burt, (and Ernie) doesn't it?
