Parents plann to protest tomorrow am with signs. They are unhappy that their children are forced to wash their hands, rinse out their mouths and forgo celebratory treats (cupcakes) in an effort to keep a 1st grade student who has severe peanut allergies safe.
I wish I was in Florida, I'd turn up to support the schools decision to try and keep this child safe.

I could understand one parent's argument that the mouth rinsing takes away from class time, but foregoing a hand wash? Every single class that DS1 has been in and every single class I've ever known at the lower elementary levels and preschool does a hand wash first thing--a thorough hand wash. It's always been for hygiene and prevention of disease for the benefit of all children and teacher. So they want to nix hand washing, a hygiene measure that all kids at that age do before class, to supposedly preserve class time yet bring back in the birthday cupcakes which will take up more class time. Don't pee on my leg and tell me it's raining. I read that the parents were responding to media inquiries. I'm not so sure I would but that's me.

I can't find an e-mail contact for the school so... here's the link to the Chancellor http://www.fldoe.org/Schools/default.asp#contacts

What a great idea. If I was in the situation of these poor parents I would appreciate support from parents who understand. I wonder if we can't find an e mail for the principal? It would be better to go there. Anyone in FLA that can find out?

i live about an hour from edgewater, and i am pretty familiar with the community. that being said, i will try to refrain from any derogatory comments. however, i must say that the parents there are not THAT much different than what i have encountered here. FL is definitely new and behind the curve in making these kinds of accommodations for kids with LTFA, but it probably won't be for long as the numbers of kids increase.

the accommodations many on this board accept as "standard" just don't fly here. if you are familiar with my search for a K recently, i asked for the most basic accommodations and was left with a returned check and a school that thought i was asking for way too much.

the best part of the article, though, is this: "On average, it's probably a good 30 minutes taken out of the day. That's my child's education. Thirty minutes could be a whole subject," Starkey said.

WTH do they think classroom celebrations areSmiley?? educationalSmiley??

Hey, at the very-well-to-do-not-"redneck"-per-se schools my kids were at for past 4 years (not counting this year & before we moved again) the parents AND staff lived and breathed for food celebrations and food in the classroom. It was inconceivable that they would actually curb the food use/abuse in order to accommodate the disability, be it LTFA or diabetes, or whatever.

It has to do with misplaced sense of entitlement as well as deep ignorance.

Perhaps "character flaw" is a disability too?

Facebook pages are abuzz as well --

Here's the link to our FAS FB page. I'll try to get in here with other related "Allergy Group" FB pages as I find them (if they are public & you are not on FB, you can still view).

https://www.facebook.com/pages/Food-Allergy-Support-FAS/136478329674

ETA --

Don't know if this is public page, or if you have to be signed up to FB to read, but here's another:

https://www.facebook.com/AllergyEats

Obviously, I won't post links to "personal" FB pages that are not a "group" or "org" or other "entity", but those are abuzz as well in multiple directions.

I'm going to mail a card of support to the family and ask permission for my daughter to write to her. This just breaks my heart.

I'm at a loss for words - except to say...Protesting with signs? Are you kidding me? You can't even do this politely and calmly if you have an issue with this and protect the feelings of this child? What example are you setting for your own kids? Where is your compassion?

Edited to add:
I understand that the other parents have a right to express how they feel about the current accommodations, but how they went about it, with the protest and signs just seems the wrong way to go about it.
