It's like coloring with beet juice. Annato is just as a natural colorant as beet. These are not common allergens.
There are artificial colors too like:
In the USA, the following seven artificial colorings are permitted in food (the most common in bold) as of 2007[update]:
* FD&C Blue No. 1 - Brilliant Blue FCF, E133 (Blue shade)
* FD&C Blue No. 2 - Indigotine, E132 (Dark Blue shade)
* FD&C Green No. 3 - Fast Green FCF, E143 (Bluish green shade)
* FD&C Red No. 40 - Allura Red AC, E129 (Red shade)
* FD&C Red No. 3 - Erythrosine, E127 (Pink shade) [4]
* FD&C Yellow No. 5 - Tartrazine, E102 (Yellow shade)
* FD&C Yellow No. 6 - Sunset Yellow FCF, E110 (Orange shade)

Hi,
I am new to this, and kinda relieved to find some information on annatto. I'm trying to arrange testing for this allergy, as although I have been hospitalised on a couple of occasions due to anaphylaxis, and continue to take terrible allergies, I have no diagnosis.
Foods that have caused me trouble include popsicles, indian foods (annatto is the red colouring) chinese foods (again annatto is the colouring) Doritoes (cool blue and cheese contain annatto) pre packed pizza's, cheeses, ice cream, bakery products, breads to mention just a few.Oh ... beware pizza hut and dominoes dressings.
If you think you have this allergy, beware of annatto disguised under the following names:
E160b
Achiote
Achuete
Bixin
Norbixin
I am struggling to get proper testing in the UK, so if anybody can confirm if it should be patch test, blood test etc that would be most helpful to me. Meanwhile, epipen at the ready, I'll update with foods I find that contain this.

Thank you for the great list. We have been dealing with the annatto allergy for a few year. I have NEVER seen this kind of list.
My DS's have like Cool Ranch Doritos and have never had a reaction. I do not see annatto on the label. Is this in the US?

Thanks for sharing. I found out I developed an allergy to annatto as an adult. I was actually pregnant when I found out. It has been really scary at times, when I had anaphyllactic reactions. However, ever since finding out I have been much more careful what I eat. REading labels all the time.

After a reaction in my daughter today I am now aware that Olive Garden Salad dressing contains Annatto Coloring.
