A friend asked if flax seed is part of the tree nut/nut groups. I don't think it is, but figured I would ask all of the experts here.

I found this on wikipedia:

Not a nut? Safe for those avoiding?

I've never seen it classified as a nut. It doesn't come from a tree--I think it is considered a seed.

We use ground flaxseed in baking all the time. It is nutritious and helps bind baked goods together. We have never had a problem with it.

HTH!
