My allergist told me today that sulfites do not cause anaphylaxis reactions such as the one I had on Saturday. Is this true? What tests are there for sulfite allergy?

Yes you can, though it's rare.

Dozens of people died of anaphylactic shock in the early 80s and hundreds more ended up in ERs (myself included), that's what forced the FDA into creating the sulfite labeling laws in 1987. Get a different allergist who knows his subject!

Technically it is an "anaphylactoid" reaction. Sulphites are not proteins, so the mechanism by which the body is sensitized to them is different from an IgE-mediated allergy. These reactions can be severe, however!
